How to make a GST invoice
- In the “from” box, enter your business name, address and GSTIN.
- Under “Bill To”, enter the customer’s name, address and their GSTIN if they are GST-registered (B2B).
- Use a unique, consecutive invoice number. It may contain letters, digits, “-” and “/”, up to 16 characters.
- Add the place of supply (state) in Notes. It decides whether CGST + SGST or IGST applies.
- For each line item, include the HSN code (goods) or SAC code (services) in the description.
- Set the GST rate that applies to your goods or services. The template starts at 18%.
- Download the PDF and share it with your customer.
Mandatory details on a GST tax invoice
- Supplier’s name, address and GSTIN
- Invoice number and date
- Recipient’s name, address and GSTIN (if registered)
- HSN/SAC code, description, quantity and value of goods or services
- Taxable value, rate and amount of tax (CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST)
- Place of supply, with the state name and code for inter-state supplies
- Signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised person
CGST + SGST or IGST?
If you and your customer are in the same state (intra-state supply), GST is split equally between CGST and SGST. For example, 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. If you are in different states (inter-state supply), the full rate is charged as IGST. To show the split, rename the tax label (for example “CGST 9% + SGST 9%”) and mention the breakdown in Notes.
Note: businesses above the e-invoicing turnover threshold must also register B2B invoices on the government Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to get an IRN and QR code. This tool creates the invoice PDF only. Check the latest GST rules or ask your CA if you’re unsure what applies to you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this if I’m not GST-registered?
Yes. Unregistered businesses should issue a regular invoice or bill of supply without charging GST. Remove the tax line using the × next to it.
Where do I put the HSN or SAC code?
Add it to the start of each line item’s description, for example “998314 – Website design”.
Does the PDF show the rupee symbol?
On screen amounts show ₹. In the PDF they are written as “INR”, for example INR 1,180.00, which is equally valid on a tax invoice.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can create and download as many documents as you like without paying and without creating an account.
