GST, HST, PST and QST by province
Canada charges a federal GST of 5%. Some provinces combine it with their own tax into a single HST, while others charge a separate provincial sales tax. Click Taxes in the editor and pick your province:
- Ontario: HST 13%
- Nova Scotia: HST 14%
- New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island: HST 15%
- Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut: GST 5%
- British Columbia: GST 5% + PST 7%
- Saskatchewan: GST 5% + PST 6%
- Manitoba: GST 5% + RST 7%
- Quebec: GST 5% + QST 9.975%
Which rate applies generally depends on where the goods or services are delivered, not where your business is based. Rates change, so confirm the current rate with the Canada Revenue Agency or Revenu Québec.
What to put on a Canadian invoice
- Your business name and your GST/HST registration number (for example 123456789RT0001)
- The invoice date and a unique invoice number
- The total amount payable
- The GST/HST charged, or a statement that the price includes it
- For larger sales, your customer’s name and a description of what you supplied
The CRA asks for more detail as the sale gets bigger (under $100, $100 to $499.99, and $500 or more). Business customers need these details to claim input tax credits, so include them every time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to charge GST/HST?
Small suppliers with taxable sales of $30,000 or less over four consecutive calendar quarters usually don’t have to register. Once you register, you must charge GST/HST on taxable sales.
Which province’s tax do I charge?
Usually the province where the goods are delivered or the services are used. For example, an Alberta business selling to a customer in Ontario typically charges 13% HST.
Can I show GST and PST separately?
Yes. Choose a preset such as “British Columbia – GST 5% + PST 7%”, and BillDoodle lists each tax on its own line.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can create and download as many documents as you like without paying and without creating an account.
