VAT invoices in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s Value Added Tax is administered by the Inland Revenue Department (IRD). The standard rate is 18%. Businesses registered for VAT issue a tax invoice to their customers; businesses that aren’t registered must not charge VAT.
BillDoodle sets up a Sri Lankan invoice for you: amounts in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), dates as DD/MM/YYYY, an A4 PDF, VAT at 18%, and the total written in words.
What to put on a Sri Lankan tax invoice
- The words “Tax Invoice” – choose Tax Invoice as the document type
- Your business name, address, TIN and VAT registration number
- The customer’s name, address and VAT number if they are registered
- The invoice date and a unique serial number
- A description of the goods or services, the quantity and the value excluding VAT
- The VAT rate and the VAT amount, and the total including VAT
The IRD sets the exact requirements and the registration threshold, and they change from time to time. Check the latest IRD guidance or ask your tax adviser.
Frequently asked questions
Can I issue an invoice if I’m not VAT-registered?
Yes. Issue a normal invoice without VAT: click Taxes and choose “No VAT”. Don’t call it a tax invoice.
Can the total be shown in words?
Yes. Sri Lankan invoices start with “Amount in words” switched on, for example “One Hundred Eighteen Thousand Rupees Only”.
Can I invoice overseas clients in dollars?
Yes. Pick USD or another currency from the Currency menu. Exports of services may be zero-rated, so check with your adviser before charging VAT.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can create and download as many documents as you like without paying and without creating an account.
Where is my data stored?
Everything you type stays in your own browser. Drafts and your history are saved locally on this device, so nothing is uploaded to our servers.
