What to put on a freelancer invoice
Typical line items for this kind of work:
- Project work – milestone 1 of 3
- Hourly work – 12 hours @ hourly rate
- Revisions beyond the agreed two rounds
- Rush delivery fee
Write each line so your client can see exactly what they’re paying for. A specific description gets paid faster than a vague one.
Invoicing tips for freelancers
- Agree on payment terms before you start, and repeat them on every invoice.
- For long projects, invoice by milestone instead of waiting until the end.
- Ask for a deposit (25–50%) on new clients and record it under “Amount Paid”.
- If you work with international clients, invoice in their currency to remove friction.

Should freelancers charge hourly or per project?
Hourly works when the scope is unclear; per-project works when it’s well defined and rewards you for working efficiently. Either can be invoiced with this template.
What payment terms should a freelancer use?
Net 14 or Net 30 are common. Shorter terms such as Net 7 are reasonable for small jobs or new clients.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can create and download as many documents as you like without paying and without creating an account.
